Spring MPP Meetings

Your OnePoint Government and External Relations (GER) Committee volunteers have been hard at work this spring, meeting with newly elected Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) across our region as part of OREA's Spring MPP Meetings. These meetings are a vital opportunity to raise awareness about the issues impacting REALTORS®, consumers, and communities across Ontario.

This year's campaign focuses on three key policy priorities aimed at improving the real estate environment across the province.

OREA’s Key Asks to MPPs

OREA is calling on MPPs to support the following important changes:

1. Support In-Person Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) Hearings

OREA is urging MPPs to write to Attorney General Doug Downey, advocating for a shift away from the LTB’s current digital-first approach. While virtual hearings were necessary during the pandemic, many Ontarians now face challenges accessing or participating in online-only processes.

OREA is recommending a return to in-person LTB hearings to better serve tenants, landlords, and housing providers ensuring equitable access to justice and timely resolutions.

2. Exempt Factory-Built Homes from Seasonal Weight Limits

Ontario’s seasonal weight limits currently restrict the transportation of factory-built homes, particularly in rural and northern regions where this form of housing plays a critical role in affordability and supply.

OREA is asking MPPs to write to Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria, requesting a change to the Highway Traffic Act to exempt factory-built homes from these seasonal weight restrictions. This would allow for year-round delivery, making it easier to get affordable housing to the communities that need it most.

3. Protect Consumers by Regulating Real Estate Auctioneers

Auctioneers who facilitate real estate transactions are currently not required to register with the RECO creating a potential gap in consumer protection and industry oversight.

OREA is advocating for a legislative amendment that would require these auctioneers to register with RECO, holding them to the same standards and accountability as licensed REALTORS®.

MPP support is being sought via a letter to Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery Stephen Crawford.

OnePoint’s Local Advocacy Work

In addition to supporting OREA’s province-wide advocacy, OnePoint’s GER Committee is using these meetings to:

  • Share local housing data and insights to help MPPs understand the unique needs of their constituents.

  • Highlight OnePoint’s local initiatives to address housing supply and affordability.

  • Offer continued support to MPPs in their work related to planning, development, and housing policy.

These one-on-one conversations ensure that our elected officials see REALTORS® as informed, trusted partners on the ground.
