OnePoint at OREA’s REALTOR® Advocacy Day & Powerhouse Conference
This week, OnePoint’s Government & External Relations Committee proudly participated in OREA’s REALTOR® Advocacy Day and Powerhouse Conference. Our volunteers joined REALTORS® from across Ontario to speak directly with provincial decision-makers about the urgent housing challenges facing our communities.
On Tuesday, December 2nd, OnePoint's government relations committee volunteers met with local MPPs at Queen’s Park. We championed stronger housing and rental policy, consumer protection, and solutions that support homebuyers, sellers, renters, and communities across our region.
These conversations were constructive, collaborative, and demonstrated once again the trusted role REALTORS® play in housing.
OREA’s 2025 Advocacy Asks
During Advocacy Day, our volunteers supported three key actions being put forward by OREA to strengthen Ontario’s rental landscape. For when the rental system is out of balance, it slows the transition from renting to owning:
1. Review and Modernize the Residential Tenancies Act
The Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) has not been comprehensively updated in nearly 20 years. Today’s rental market is dramatically different, from rising demand to evolving housing types.
OREA is calling for a full review and modernization of the RTA to better reflect current needs, strengthen accountability, and improve outcomes for both tenants and rental housing providers.
2. Support Mediation Services at the Landlord and Tenant Board
The Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) is facing a backlog of more than 37,000 active cases. A formal pre-hearing mediation process, modeled after successful systems in places like British Columbia, could help resolve disputes more quickly.
This would:
Speed up resolutions,
Improve access to justice for tenants and landlords, and
Reduce pressure on the LTB.
3. Incentivize New Rental Supply Through an Income Tax Credit
Ontario needs more high-quality rental housing. To encourage responsible investment, OREA proposes a targeted income tax credit for small landlords who:
Own five or fewer rental properties, and
Are in good standing with the LTB.
This incentive would reward responsible property owners, increase rental supply, and provide greater confidence for tenants.
Thank You to Our Volunteers
Our successful participation in Advocacy Day was only possible thanks to the dedication of our government and external relations committee volunteers. Their expertise and advocacy help ensure that the voices of REALTORS® and our communities are heard where it matters most.
We look forward to continuing this important work to support housing and rental solutions across our region.
